that’s using video to record your life, thoughts…endless possibilities

I really had no idea…Vlogging? There’s a word I’ve not heard until I read about it on…you guessed it…MSNBC on MSN.com!

This is what happens when you subscribe to newsletters and join websites, you learn new things and obtain lots of information! So, Vlogging is the new (and God knows it’s probably not that new, but as I’m just hearing about it – it’s new(s) to me!) way to blog.

Apparently there’s a website, Ourmedia.org, where you can go online and create your video blog. According to Michael Rogers, the columnist who wrote the article on MSNBC, this website is an “open-source citizen-journalist project masterminded by veteran new-media writer JD Lasica and the even more veteran multimedia pioneer Marc Canter” (I just had to quote Mr. Rogers because that was such a mouthful!).

Some of the people whom he interviewed are very excited about vlogging because apparently, it will get people to put the television control down and get them to think, read, respond and write. It might even help some people to use it as proof in recording events and happenings that otherwise would only be hear-say.

Here in lies my problem with this, Vlogging, like the cellular phone camera; could definitely lead to people recording other people without their permission. And the snafus that can ensue are possibly mind boggling.

Legal ramifications aside, where video cameras are concern, the cost might be a lot less expensive these days, however, not everyone can afford to buy one. Plus, would Vlogging replace Blogging? You see, no one sees you when you’re writing a blog, you can be in your pajamas, your undies, and you might even be in your birthday suit! You can sit at your computer and blog away without worrying about what you look like.

However with Vlogging, you have to be presentable to the public who will view your production. Would they not watch your video because you’re not attractive enough or you look as if you have no intelligence and cannot possibly have anything good to say?

It’s even been suggested that vlogging might cause illiteracy because people wouldn’t read anymore or even comprehend what they read so as to make an interpretation of what is written. In other words, why waste time trying to understand what you read? What’s the use of reading when you can just watch a video and be told what to do?

So this is what our future will look like? Not only might there be the possibilities of more ridiculous law suits because of Vlogging, people who cannot read and comprehend won’t even be able to interpret a subpoena when they receive one.

I don’t know if I would join the Vlogging crowd. I prefer to write my thoughts down, not speak them out loud (at least not all the time). That way I say more and hopefully sound more intelligent than I look!
