Grouped parts and custom parts seem to be excluded by the thumbnail generator when saving a ship as a template. This also seems to break the initial Steam Workshop image.
It also breaks the Steam Workshop upload image.
I have experienced the same thing. Almost half of my workshop designs are black screens. Tried to post this issue in the forum about two weeks ago but no one responded. If Devs are reading, please fix this or at least comment.

It's a shame because it's a really useful feature. You can use it to do resizing or just section off layers. I just started experimenting with it.
