The battle viewer has an annoying habit of displaying ships in combat which are right next to each other circling but not firing at each other because the ship's targeting says the target is out of range. The ships appear to be right on top of each other.
On watching the battles, it is apparent that support ships start out combat at a speed of zero. Makes sense, they want to stay as far from combat as possible. But the battle viewer shows them getting closer and closer to the enemy ships as the battle progresses as if they are moving. They are not really moving however, so when a support ship gets targeted, the ship is really far in the back by the starting line, but the viewer makes them look like they are right on top of each other, thus circling each other.
I understand the aesthetics of this decision to have the ships move in on the battle viewer to allow a gradual zooming in on the action, but I think I would rather they not move on the screen if they are not really moving in the behind-the-scenes battle simulator.
My 2 cents. I would suspect others are confused by the circling and nonfiring ships when supports ships are being attacked.
