I'm looking for some changes to the AI ship designer. I like letting the AI have a high degree of autonomy to design ships, but there are times when I think it should be able to do better. There are some problems that creep up, such missile weapon ships being designed with missile defense despite the fact the enemy is using lasers (which missile defense is poor against). Likewise, the game can't be told to design ships differently, like design fast constructors or cheap constructors, nor can we add new designs.
What we have:
-An AI ship designer that designs ships for you.
-The AI can and will update those designs without you having to do anything. It will do so whenever you get new technology.
-A list of design templates that govern how the AI will design ships for you (such as constructors or survey ships).
What I'm looking for is the following:
-The ability to choose what weapons and defense to use (and their balance).
-The ability to not only choose how to balance between different weapon types, but to also balance between weapons and defense.
-The ability to choose how much space is given to split between engines, sensors, and life support (and tools to balance those).
-The ability to tell the AI to use an exact amount of modules (like 2 engines, no more no less), instead giving it space to do as it pleases.
-The ability to make design templates so it will design new ships based upon those templates (we don't yet seem to have a carrier design template).
Does anyone else have their own ideas?
