I like the freedom of the main map, which helps me imagine that space is 3D.
The idea, that I have to protect my space by guarding it's borders - in free space , in vast free space.
The hexes disturb me. They demand from me to think in strategy and not in exploration and prevents me freeing my mind to go where no one has gone before.
May be I can describe my behaviour in Civ V: I play without hexes to enjoy the wilderness, I switch to hexes when it gets complicated (war).
Maybe it can help, when one could switch off the hexes in the main map as one likes?
When I am talking here I could add some ideas I miss in GalCIV II:
I would like to have the opportunity to build stargates for instant jumps (like that in Babylon 5 where large ships are needed to build them in the distance). I would like to build large ships which can be equipped with a jump drive which can jump directly into space.
