GalCiv2 - Great Game
GalCiv3 - Very happy so far.
For Forum Users: I understand the game is in development and many features may not be available yet. This is just a list of my experiences. I understand that many others have pointed out invalid/incorrect text in bubble fields. To those forum users that like to point out previously discussed facts in other treads, just link to them.
For the developers: I fully understand somethings are not possible. So I'm listing these in group of most problematic to game play. I understand basic AI is currently being used.
Most problematic Topics:
Large Map Game Crash: Previously mentioned by others: Played on huge map and had filled the galaxy with planets so the data size became large. I found that the game would crash and recent save games would get corrupted. If I were to load a good save, I'd get a couple turns then the same crash pattern.
Planet Generation: Sorry but this is the most annoying factor about the game, GalCiv2 wasn't that great either.
- If I choose Abundant Stars, there should not be massive gaps between stars on a large+ sized map even with loose clusters.
- If I choose Abundant Planets and Abundant Colonization planets, I should not get just 1 planet per star system that is inhabitable 50% of the time.
Government Menu Adjustments: not reflected in Planet screen upon change. I have to change to another planet or exit and re-enter the menu to get colony production stat updates.
-Note it's a fairly common issue, but a sub window change and the master window does not reflect the change.
Efficiency and HotKeys - I find the lack of effect hotkeys in the game bad. Most of these menus can't be administered with key types.
- Arrow keys for menu navigate especially between planets.
- When in a list menu, be able to move up and down with the arrow keys.
Survey and Ship Path: In GalCiv2 if a ship with survey passed over an anomaly it scanned it.
1a) In GalCiv3... the survey ship will just fly right over the anomaly.
1b) I know most people hate Star Trek Voyager, but they never missed an opportunity to scan an anomaly even if it was the crew itself. Insert stupid Nelix moment *here*
2) Movement of Survey ship near an nebula/etc when anomaly is inside the nebula/etc. Sometimes I click to move the survey ship to an anomaly and it selects a point that is nearby but isn't the anomaly itself.
3) Movement Waypoint System needed with shift key: Use shift-click to set waypoints for a ship. (Helps avoid the default L or V style pathing decisions and lets the user deside.)
Ship Clicking: When I click on the location of a ship. I should always get the ship first. I would like to see some visual confirmation on the screen like a highlighted circle/local ship flash. Half the time the ship is already selected and I have NO idea where it is. There should be a HotKey command to center and flash the location of the ship. The current state is insufficient. It gets worse inside a nebula/etc... The ships are hidden when deselected and they are MY SHIPS. This is annoying.
Text Bubbles: 1) These sub windows do not auto size properly so I cannot read all text. 2) I really need to know Approval wise, why my planet is unhappy. This window doesn't tell me in the planet screen 3) Please get the colony management screen working. 4) Approval/Tourism/Influence should have more interconnected application. The number of tourist buildings seems limited, what is there to put next to the tourist Port of Call when I want to encourage the Yor to their cultural doom?
Sorting: All menus should be sortable by column.
Colony Management: The GalCiv2 Colony Management screen was almost perfect. Had enough to get the job done. Please make something similar. We need to be able to sort by Production, Research, Economy, Starbase... (by column).
Would Like to Have:
Quick Start: Does quick start go with my previously set map options? Or is it a different process that is random? PLEASE make sure there is at least a Quick Map gen method that goes with my previous settings. I'm a bit of a initial planet generation purist... I will regenerate until I get a initial starting planet and position I like. Some times takes hours.
Alt-Tab and Window Mode: GalCiv3 crashes if you start the game and don't leave the window primary until initial load is finished. Win7 apparently doesn't even load in the backgroud, we have to be in the game window for CPU to process loading. I don't know if this a an default because of Win7 or not. There should be a menu option to run in the background with sound off.
Trade Licenses: seem limited but I see that I get a +1,+2 increase by research other techs.
Era Bar: The 3 ages of game play is too short. I've barely researched mid techs by the time the bar reaches the end of age 3.
Blackhole Radius: Too large on small maps. Perhaps add 1+ range every 2-3 map size increase. Would be nice for obstacles so straight travel isn't efficient.
Virus Scanners: Game should rarely crash frequently because of a virus scanner.
Probably have a lot more. Sorry I don't visit the forum much, just wanted to provide feedback.
Cheers,
TJ
