Star names...suck to be honest. :3

3776 stars, and the journey of one man to right a wrong.

I started a game and was having fun as the iridium (love them ) BUT after a few turns and was colonizing I scrolled over some odd names. In fact all the stars in my area had fubar names like; xhxl558; Ragnarokchu; LordAreon; Xelni Jota. Seriously?

The realization that they sucked and people were not over reacting from previous complaints nearly made me laugh...because I'm like that. (lol) More seriously though, its going to be a first impression for many people, and its the type of random annoying thing that breaks immersion and makes you say, "WTF?!?" There are others that shouldn't be in either, like Hoth also known as random star name 57, and alderan, Rumpestildskin, Sauron, Sobek-Re. Sobek-Re sounds familiar more than others though. And they aren't even founders names, they are SD made! (still better than gizmotechnica)

Realistically, founders star names begin at 532 and there are 3776 names so SD would need to replace 7/8ths of the names and i don't think its possible nor do they want to do something that boring. Luckily I am editing out all the shit for those that are lazy, yet demanding that star names be serious. Consider it my Christmas present.

More specifically regular names like Harper (love that name) and Katie I'm leaving, no one should have a problem with a name that might already be a star in real life. It also makes absolutely no sense to bug me about when I'll be done because I'll share it at release only, when mods are working and it will just make more sense. (and I'm busy as bees.)

So:

1. Edit star names.

2. Give out star names.

3. Rejoice.

I did the same thing.  I had a file for II that had several thousand real star names.  Thinking about Excel and some macros to convert it to III.

If someone did want to get rid of ALL founders names its pretty easy.

make a back up folder first. You go to the game files, then the English folder and the star names file. Scroll down to were the founder names start (530s) and then get rid of them. I don't know what would happen if you had a game with more stars than names, it might crash your game or not display any name?

In fact I was looking up alot of cool stuff in the games code. Like we will be able to mine nebula*! Thanks SD!

I think the game would use a name twice then.

532 of 3776 is closer to 1/7 of the whole rather then 7/8ths...

We are going to to make a editing pass on all the star name, but we will be a bit more forgiving than some might like, We really appreciate the support from our early founders, and want to be able to use their star names if at all possible.

This means we may be making some changes, Translating L33t to plain English, Adding spaces, and truncating some. Hopefully we will be able to keep as many names as possible without to much strain on the players.

That said their are currently 3339 founder names, so its going to take a bit of time for us to curate them all.

LOL I love freedom of speech, but the name MUST DIE!!!!!

Firstly good morning, and good luck. But I have a 800 star head start and altered names to be easier to pronounce! ha

Also you wrote "to" twice in your opening statement and you need a 's' on 'need', "We are going to to make a editing pass on all the star name," :3

at 7.09 any sane person would round down which we all know you are neither , you also said 7/8ths however you started out saying it was the stardock names were bad so we should edit the founder star names.

Anyway you're wrong on the rounding

you're wrong on the apparent flip flop on editing the names

which makes you wrong on being right HA

While estimates vary greatly from party to party for rounding lets agree that the work to be done is paramount and debating opinionated facts to me won't change anything.

I am always right on Monday, but on Tuesday I am above suspicion or doubt. So I am right.

And what in the name of a Drengin's hairy whiskers is wrong with Wishupona??

I just edit any star names when I colonize, myself, if I feel the name is toooooooo stupid. I still think the simplest thing is on starting a New Game, the player gets an option: Use Founder Names for Stars or Use Generic Names For Stars...

When I initially changed mine a few weeks back I simply changed it to "Oldman"

---

As far as renaming - when undertaking the arduous task of going through each name I created a few rules for myself as I went along.

1. Any names that were joined LikeThis - I simply would add a space Like This.

2. As much as I didn't like to (mainly due to colonized planets holding them as well), I retained any Roman numerals. Some made sense while others not so much. But for consistency's sake I kept most of them as there were quite a few in the list.

3. Any Arabic (or 'normal') numerals being used as a suffix - I converted to Roman numerals to be consistent with above.

4. Also any names like anmagar67 - Rather than do Anmagar LXVII since there were no other Anmagar star names, I just dropped the 67 to have the much cleaner name Anmagar. Same with DORISMCMXLVII - I simply renamed it Doris.

5. If a name was visually erratic with combos of broken numerals and numbers like Am I3 nS - I simply went a combo visual/phonetic route and called it Ami Threens. Names like DPH 40717 I just dropped the numbers and called it Deph... N Y S P 4231 simply became Nysp.

6. Any all caps names (like AMRO) were simply converted to regular caps - Amro. Also all lower caps names I gave a capital to.

7. Any name with the suffix; World, Star, Sun, Sol, etc... I either A) Dropped off the suffix if the prefix word was strong on it's own merit or  B ) Merged it to make one word: Amys World became Amysworld. or Metzgers Star became Metzgerstar.

8. Names like Berea DM i would either conjoin like Bereadim or do something like Berea Dim. But the 'i' or appropriate vowel would be added regardless.

9. Yes names like Bunnytopia and Cheesemonger are ridiculous - but generally if the names were 'correct' visually and grammatically I generally kept them as is. Plus it can add a little tongue in cheek to the game (which the game already has so it wasn't completely out of place).

10. Any stars with; 'of', 'the', 'in' or any other preposition were simply dropped. Eden of Wolvo became Eden Wolvo or it could be Edenwolvo.

11. Names like FearFrost simply looked better as one word so I used Fearfrost rather than Fear Frost. So in these cases like these I did not add the space but did remove the second capital letter. Also screen-namish names that had lots of alternating upper and lower cases like HayAlliG were simply made into one world Hayallig.

12. Now the absolute most annoying names of all were the non words with excess numbers. Some of these names took a little more effort and creativity. My goal was to make them fit in while somewhat keeping homage to their original name (at least to the visual/letter meaning - who knows what the true meaning is). Some examples:

HBW264 = Aichbi Dubea (dropped the numbers).

HK47 = Hekphorzevin.

NGS 7652 = Engis Svensyx Phituu.

NJ678KPH = Enjai Sixsev Ekph.

RH25052013 = Rh.

RHF 2508 = Rhf.

TDN1099 = Te Di Ehn (dropped the numbers).

X2f01 = Xtuph Owon.

050313 asag = Simply just Asag.

101010 = Oneoh Oneoh Oneoh.

127.0.0.1 = Ontoos Evan I.

3.141592653589 = Pi.

Though I am not 100% happy with some of these last ones at least they look somewhat alien in nature.

All in all, after fixing the list my in game experience with the names is great. With the exception of the roman numeral star names all the names blend right in seamlessly. I will have to reassess the roman numeral ones and I may alter them by removing them or replacing them with Greek suffixes (i.e. I = Alpha, II = Beta, III = Gamma, etc...)'

Perhaps Stardock should redo the Star name submissions and have all the founders resubmit names but this time establish some rules to the naming process.

95% of the names I passed over for tweaking were perfectly fine as is - IF - they just had spaces between words, caps issues corrected and excessive numbers or roman numerals attached to them removed. I know the numbers mean something to people but they clutter up the whole thing - especially when you colonize planets.

Lots of great names - I am happy they are in the game!

Quoting Director,

I simply went through and pronounced each name. Anything I didn't like the sound of I replaced with old gods, fabled places or names, famous personages, etc.

That's better than what AuraBoy did, and closer to my method.Anything that sounded dumb I altered into sounding good or easier to pronounce. Draestbotrus became Draetrus. dragonwise became Dragionalis (all stars will start with a capital letter). Leftinpeices became whatever name I wanted, I could get creative and call it Levviency.

So many Star wars, and startrek, and mass effect, and Lord of the Rings inspired names...they all must die.

If you have two StarNames text files in the folder, even if one is renamed something like Old_StarNamesText, the game will try to load up both files and then it will flag all of the duplicate names between the two files. I renamed the old text file AND moved it up to a different folder.

If you only have one text file in the folder, then I don't know what the issue is.
