Very First Impressions

Alright, I have upgraded my status to Founder. I consider this to be an investment in Stardock.

So, it's safer than Kickstarter, at least, I know the good folks of Stardock produce quality.

My very first impressions of GalCiv III are as follows:

Wow, it looks really great even in this alpha state. I am really amazed and happy at the visual

punch the product already has. As well, there has been no appreciable slow down. I hope the

64 bit processing will eliminate this particular brick wall. I like Civ 5, but it crawls to a near stop

with every turn by mid-game.

It has been a long time since I have played GalCiv II and I have forgotten a lot of the detail, however,

I found that the GalCivIII screen presentations clean and to the point as far as getting me back up

to speed. I didn't have to look up anything or puzzle for more than a moment. The presentation gave me

what I need with no clutter or confusion.

Really, an ace job, so far. Can't wait to see what comes.

I wish there was some possibility to spend unused production from the beginning.

I always get to the point, where i cannot build anymore, very fast, and then all my production is wasted...

I don't know if this would be feasible (or even fun) but what if ships and planetary structures degraded over time. Similar to how RPG's treat armor and weapons. Thus your infrastructure would degrade from 100% through usage and you would have to fund repairs and general upkeep. Removing funding would accelerate this decay. Nothing huge but just a slow ebb in % that left untreated would take a toll on your overall stats.

If your referencing the elder scrolls, they stopped that in Skyrim.

we already pay maintenance remember? But there might be something here...like lower performance of -% for less maintenance maybe.

fyi penalties aren't very fun.

At looking at a system like this, I ask the question: what purpose does it serve?

It is probably more "realistic" but not so much that I could see adding in a whole subsystem.

The only benefit off hand I could see is to encourage people to modernize their fleets, so you don't have huge masses of crap ships floating around. There might be something in there that could be useful, but I would want it to just weaken my ships in general.

I personally wouldn't mind this either. And I could see a few ways to do this.

One idea would be to allow fleets to "slowly" upgrade using production by using the asteroid mining mechanics. Basically you connect a planet to a fleet, and its production gets sent to the fleet for purposes of upgrading the fleet to another configuration. So you have your fast way using money, and your slow way using production.

A simplier idea that many 4x games uses is a "wealth" ability, that turns production into money.

There is no reason for wasted production. You have economic stimulus, research project, cultural festival, and birthing subsidies without any research. You can also hit the "govern planet" button an move your the wheel so you are not putting out any production. Finally, you can always build ships.

Ah, a mistake from my side, then. I thought economic stimulus, research project etc. had to be researched before having any use.
