How about some escape pod eye-candy?
When does it happens, when the ship hits 0 or should it start ejecting pods as soon as it takes damage. So let say a ship has 100 hp, and 100 pods, if it hits 99 hp, it ejects 1?
No escape pods. No retreat. Any of my officers caught retreating will be SHOT.
Kill'em all or die trying.
But what if you realized the fight was lost, what would you do? I'd retreat to fight another day.
Plus escape pods would cause issues with the current 2 gig limit issue.
