Game Seems Choppy

Hello,

I submitted a support issue to StarDock last night.. and havent heard back yet.. so i figured let me post here and see what others have encountered.

I am at work now, so I dont have access to my home PC (where the machine is installed) to provide a 100% accurate report..... but i would be VERY surprised if my machine wasnt strong enough to meet the RECOMMENDED requirements.. as I am a professional Graphic Designer who runs Photoshop and other 3D rendering software applications with no problems.

I have Windows XP and a Nvidea GEForce (I believe 6200) graphics card with DirectX 9.0c, 2GB of RAM and a Processor that I believe is a little faster than 2 Ghz.... My monitor is a HP 22 inch widescreen with a resolution of 1680 x 1050.

And yet.. when i tried to run PM2008 last night... both the opening sequence video and the game play run extremely slow and choppy. Ive tried changing the resolutions of the game as well as disabled FULL SCREEN mode... but it still runs very choppy. I even closed out all of my memory hog applications that I had running.. like Outlook.. and still CHOPPY.

Am i missing something? Has anyone else encountered a similar problem?

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Very odd. On every machine we're played the game on, the opening video is the LAST thing to get chopppy (as in, if the game played at 10 fps, the video would still run at 200).

Can you post your my 'my games\polmachine2008\debug.err' file here so we can get a better idea of what's going on?

I will have to do it when I get home later this evening.

Where EXACTLY can I find this file?

I saw someone else has posted the .err file.... however I couldnt seem to find it in my Program Files > directory.

I did not see a "my games" folder in my PM 2008 game folder.

I doubt this would have anything to do with it.. but I opted for the Digital Download vs a Retail BOX version.

Where EXACTLY can I find this file?

the file is located at"My Documents\My Games\PolMachine2008\debug.err".  It gets overritten every time you start a new game.

thanks... ill post it up when i get home in about 3 hours or so.

Anyone know where I can find an online ro downloadable version of the user manual in the meantime that I can read now?

I am having the EXACT same problem! Everything, especially on the menus seems like it is on a delay. You click a button, nothing happens for two seconds, and then it happens. I have tried this game on my laptop and it works perfectly, but its not even playable on the desktop because of the same reason of the original poster. What should I do??

curbyourentropy: Do you also get the choppiness in FullScreen mode?

Also, can you all try turning off the 'Map Glow' option. It's quite a hog...I'd like to see performance sans that effect.

This thread reminds me...gotta get an option in for shoing the framerate for the next update!

Berndie90: Choppy in-game video on Geforce FX cards is an old issue (same in GC2). Just turn off anti-aliasing (they're *very* bad at it) and it should speed right up.

Go to options, and turn off anti-aliasing. That will solve the problem.  It's particularly bad if you try to play in a window.

The only thing I could find that looked like Anti-Aliasing was "Multi-Samples"...and those were already set to off...and the choppiness continued! Anything else I can try?

Try turning off 'Map Glow' and 'Unit/Character Outlines'. These can suck up rendering time

Still nothing...I tried turning EVERYTHING off that I could (i.e. lowest resolution, everything off or turned down) and still the same slowdown. Is this card just not going to cut it??

Yeah, I didn't mean to sound like I was posting a solution, sorry for any confusion. I'm just trying to get the devs' attention, since the impulse forum seems a little slower.

Also, I think our experiences point towards a Geforce 5/6-specific game bug rather than an Nvidia driver issue. When graphics-hungry shooters like Bioshock are running much smoother than PM, there's something really wrong and turning down game settings isn't the answer.

You can also try turning off the Candidate Outlines in the Options screen.  That may help it become less choppy.

Exactly...all we keep being told is to update drivers and turn things off, but I've already turned EVERYTHING off and updated the drivers. The issue HAS to be in relation to programming or the card...I can't see it any other way...

For a lot of users, these steps fix their problems.  If it does not for you, then we investigate further to see how we can fix it.  We do want you to be able to play our game.  Really.
