My immediate reaction after the intro scene (and knowing the story) was to compare it to another story.
Summary: Mega powerful alien race messes with dimensional technology too much, hole to another place opens up. Horrible energy/soul eating energy critters pop out, start owning everyone and turn now mindless victims into all-conquering slave army. Galaxy in trouble. This is where the heroes/players come in.

The main trigger for my comparison the tentacle-y white energy thing that you see when the research station goes pow. It doesn't look like your generic explosion and certainly like nothing displayed in the game. (Except maybe the "phasing" effect, hmmm.)
Critters like the aforementioned seem appropriate for driving a battle hardend crew nuts. 'Cause I don't think you basic alien soldier/gribbly would do that, no matter how tough they are in combat.
Plus the slave army is something you could reasonably fight as a TEC/Advent/Vassari alliance, unlike a vast galaxy-killing explosion, or the energy critters themselves.
On the other hand: an invading energy race made of pure energy could have
unbearably cool-looking space craft. I'm thinking something that looks like its entirely made of white light, illuminating anything in the area. They could be quality over quantity in a big way. (easier on the cpu) And I think we can trust Ironclad/Stardoc to make it good.(please let them be playable, oh please, please, please)
