Oh dear.....!

Just bought the game yesterday, having read lots of positive reviews and I'm loving what I've seen so far, thumbs up Stardock!

I have a question regarding starting out on a new game. Why is it that as soon as the game starts, the AI already has a medium sized fleet spanning multiple systems? How is this fair to the player who must start from scratch? Is this a bug that has been noted or is it working as intended?

Are you referring to the militia ships surrounding all the planets? It sounds like it, and in that case it's not the AI - simply disgruntled militia forces that hate everyone equally

They slow down your colonizing a little bit to prevent colony rush.

Or barbarians in Civilization.

Note that, like pirates, their colour is white, and they don't come with any planetary infrastructure or make any money off the world they orbit.

Also, sometimes you will find planets that already appear to be colonized by an AI, but it is really the militia (see galciv2 and civ reference). You can tell becuase all pirate ships and structures are gray. If it is gray, they are pirates (militia, minor races, whatever), not the AI

This is implemented to prevent rush colonization in the beginning of the game. Basically, they are worthless after about midgame except for cap ship exp fodder, or on some well defended neutral colonies or random worlds (and even then they are easy)

They're exactly like creep points in Warcraft 3. I don't know why people keep mentioning Gal Civ, as there's nothing equivalent in that game.
