Map making?

I'm having problems creating a map that's small. It seems like the phase lanes are always ridiculously long. I mess around with the map size, the phase length adjusters, and the orbital radius, but I doesn't seem to change much. There are just some points where it's like a 5 minute journey,
 
Green is what, smaller?
 
Red is larger?
 
Less orbital radius means a smaller overall system, right?
 
I just need some descriptions here.

Witht the standard Map designer in the Game

you have: min/max distnace (whats this?)
min//max count(amount of planets in planet groups)
orbit radius(radius os sun system) i think!
phase length (whats this?)
phase lane chance (whats this?)
