Sins + EU tax = $90

So i got my copy today, and i ordered the "Download + Retail Box" back in beta 1.

For some reason the EU wants to tax me 225 danish kroner ($45) so the game have cost me atleast $90 lol

Just want to let others living in the EU know so they dont get as surprised as i was

Why not order the European release? If you live in Europe that is. play.com has some REALLY nice deals and for a low price too. If you ordered it from here (if thats possible). Isn't it shipped from USA? Then the tax would maybe get that expensieve

When I search for "Sins of a Solar Empire" on Play.com I get nothing back. I didn't think there was a European release yet.

I looked at ordering the retail version via the Stardock website but the 80 euro put me off too. Oddly though 40 of that was Postage and Packaging, not any EU tax. In any case I just got the digital version instead and it worked like a dream. Ended up costing me €31.88 altogether and was downloaded installed within an hour.

I ordered a year ago when beta 1 was released.

Also $45 EU tax has nothing to do with shipping, its a tax that gets on everything you buy from outside the EU

Weird, I bought the digital version and a load of US Tee-shirts this week from the US and there's no $45 dollar EU tax included, I've confirmed by checking the charges to my Credit Card.

Digital download is the way. I have only payed 32€ due to the dollar exchange. The only con is that for this option you have to pay via credit card.

I also payed the small euro price for the digital version.
For GC2: DA I ordered the disc but there was no tax on it (I live in Germany).

It's not on play.com (or amazon, or dvd.co.uk, etc), and there's not currently a european publisher; ergo no distribution to european stores.

i havent payed the $45 tax yet, so the package is still at the post office.

On the paper i got says toldopkrævning which translate to "duty/tariff/customs duty" which is a percentage tax of what its worth + delivery + told + moms(25%) on anything brought outside the EU.

According to the danish wiki all have to pay the tax when buying outside the EU.

So how jonfon was able to avoid it, i dunno.

I'm afraid I might face the same poblem. Clearing customs might take up to a week and the last time I ordered from the US, customs taxed me 30 euro. 90 Euro for a game is way too much and I'm not sure I'll pick it up when/if it arrives. I'd like to have the box, though..

There is no EU Tax for buying US Items. I do it all the time quite happily with clothes.

Each EU country has its own tax systems so I don't even see how this would work. Its quite possible that Denmark has an import tax of its own I suppose but Ireland certainly doesn't.

Could be a Danish only thing maybe? I know they woldn't be allowed to apply it to EU countries but there'd be no law on them applying it to the US.

Also I've bought games only as downloads from the US, anything physical has been clothes and the like. So maybe I'm just getting away with it due to clothes being classed as "essentials" and CDs etc as Luxary items?

Reading further into this and as far as i can understand some countries in the EU does not pay the tax.

But im not quiet sure how this works, just know that my game is worth 90 dollars

If I'd bought the physical disk it would have been 90 dollars as well, but due to the P&P, not Taxes (The Stardock site was charging me it). So don't feel too bad. You get a shiny manual for it as well.

Although that does give me the flexibility of saying "I don't have one" when someone says RTFM

That is whery stange... I'm also in denmark and brougt Download + Retail Box and I dont have to pay enny thing ad the postoffice. must be a mistake... I just got the box today. about an hour ago...
