Missions - what's the point?

So what exactly is the point of missions?

It's almost impossible to build up a strong enough fleet early enough to complete them and your ally will easily eventually ditch you. This has happened to me 4 times now.

Not to mention the constant phase jumping it gets ridiculous on trying to take out ships even.

Agreed- there's no point on doing the missions to curry favor with someone who will eventually attack you anyway. I like the game- I want to love the game, but until something is done about diplomacy, it's silly to waste time and resources on the missions.

One way to improve the missions would be to "Destroy * XP of ships" instead, as I'm pretty sure killing little construction drones is worth a little less than one capital ship...

Aye, the missions can be extremely painful. Especially when they try to send you over to the opposite end of the galaxy, to destroy ships and structures from an empire you haven't even met yet.

The SoaSE wiki has a small piece on avoiding missions if you're interested. It recommends playing through with the AI set on "Locked Teams" - you will never be able to wipe out all of the other empires if you give yourself an ally, but you will never see a mission request.

Alternately, if the missions are just coming too quickly for your tastes, the wiki has details for a simple mod that lets you set the frequency for missions; if you set the mission time sufficiently high, they shouldn't bother you.

If you have any other tips or tricks for dealing with missions, please add them to the wiki for other players that have the same questions.

I personally found the missions quite fine. Yeah, the objectives can be annoying sometimes. But after you complete two missions, you can usually set up a cease fire. And two missions more and you will likely have an alliance.

I find the alliances quite handy, as the AI is quite helpful and won't necessarily ditch you. You can fail about two missions max before your alliance might end, giving you leeway for keeping relations up. Don't forget you can issue orders to the AI to help attack a location or protect one.

One game, I had two factions allied with me fairly early in the game (unlocked) in a 3 vs 2 vs 1. And we were all allied all the way to the end, and had an allied victory.
