You can pick either party. You would have feilds of candidates running in primaries to determine who will be the nominee.
I once did a very basic model of this. Test ran it using the 1976 Democratic and 1980 republican primary seasons.
It ran really well Carter won most the time (but had some tough fights in 1976)
And reagan won most the time in 1980.
With a multi candidate feild and focuses on states can be interesting. The key was Iowa and New Hampshire. Who ever won those in my test game ended up being in the final two horse race.
Many historial and ahistorical games can be created. Would greatly exand a good political game.
